Benedetto Vigna: the inventor behind the Wii console 3D motion sensor

A lots of inventions, directly or indirectly, deeply change everyday lives of most of the population of the World.

Today MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems), for example, are everywhere: who ever got simply a mobile phone, a game console or a simple washing machine, uses them without even knowing they exist.

The man who brought this technology to main consumer goods, pioneer in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), is the Italian engineer and inventor Benedetto Vigna.

Before to continue, let’s clarify: what the MEMS are?

Basically, they are systems that integrate sensors with microchips: the first capture information, the other process it, making decisions and giving orders to implement the appropriate actions. A typical application of MEMS were airbags.

In 1995, Benedetto Vigna started to work for STMicroelectronics, one of Europe’s leading electronics and semiconductor manufacturers, where he started to work on a great innovation: not only miniaturize the MEMS to a scale never seen before, but create a completely new type, with the third dimension and therefore able to interpret the movements of the real world.

The result was a great invention: a highly successful 3D motion-control-sensor, heart of the Wii console from Japanese company Nintendo. (more…)

European Patent application: annual results 2014

Last week, EPO (European Patent Office) has published its annual report 2014 where the latest trends on patents activity are presented.

2014 has been a very positive year for the EPO. Besides the increase in filings, EPO have been certified ISO 9001 being the first office among the IP5 (the five biggest offices in the world) to obtain this certification for the whole granting process.

Before digging into numbers and analyzing deeply the applications trend (we will do it in another post), we would like to present the data provided through the following EPO’s short video on annual report 2014

As we could see, good news is that total European Patent filings in 2014 have grown steadily from the past 5 years (i.e considering the period 2010-2014), with an increase of 3,1% in 2014 reaching the record number of 274.174 patent filing.  (more…)

Popular Science Inventions of the year 2014

As we are approaching the end of this year, we thought that might be interesting going on a curious “travel” among some of the 2014 best inventions.

That is why we choose for our “Patents world section” the following video, presenting a few of Popular Science’s picks for best inventions of 2014 for its annual “Invention Award”: the editors of popular magazine choose the most innovative new gadgets and ideas.

Collapsible helmet, charges gadgets and much more…:

As we lately focused our attention on transportation technology and bike-related new gadgets, one of the most interesting inventions shown in the video we would like to talk about is the portable bike helmet, Morpher. (more…)

Approved the draft bill of new Spanish patent law

The Council of Ministers approved last Friday 14th of November 2014 the submission to the Courts of the new patent law’s draft bill, thereby connecting the clock for its launch. The reform aims to ensure the quality and reliability of Spanish Patents and update the current regulations in force since 1986.

This major reform intend to adapt the Spanish legal framework in patents field to the reality of Spain of XXI century.

We are going to discuss and briefly analyze which modalities are affected by the reform and how this change in the Spanish patents law affects the situation.

Draft bill of new Patent Law: Patents

  • The draft bill of patent law simplifies the granting process and requires to pass a preliminary examination, through which is going to disappear the granting of weak patents. Thereby, patents that are finally granted shall demonstrate that they are new, involve an inventive step and have industrial application.
  • The protection of innovation is encouraged by SMEs and entrepreneurs with the decrease of official rates’ cost.

Draft bill of new Patent Law: Utility Models

  • The law also strengthens utility models, since international novelty will be required.
  • Its scope of application is extended to chemicals.
