The African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) is responsible for processing patents in the English-speaking Africans countries through an agreement ratified by the following 9 states:

  • Botswana, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Namibia, Tanzania, Swaziland, Uganda, Zimbabwe.

The processing at ARIPO involves the unification of the process from application to granting in a single language and a single substantive examination which simplifies the procedure and reduces costs.

Main features of the application for ARIPO patent registration

Member states of interest must be independently designated at the time of the application; besides, it is necessary to pay an additional fee for each one designated.

The patent application is submitted to a single patentability examination which essentially evaluates its novelty and inventiveness. Patents processed at ARIPO are subject to an annual maintenance payment starting from the 2nd year of the application.
